Before the Apollo 11 crew blasted off from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969 NASA used a Orbiting Lunar Module to take high resolution pictures for two years prior to the mission of possible landing sites.
While on the moon the Apollo crew was to collect surface samples, set up a solar wind composition experiment, measure seismic activity on the moon, and extensively photograph the surface.
